Description
This classic chocolate cake is rich, moist, and easy to bake with pantry ingredients. Perfect for birthdays, holidays, or just because!
Ingredients
1¾ cups all-purpose flour
¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1¾ cups granulated sugar
1½ tsp baking powder
1½ tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 eggs
1 cup buttermilk
½ cup vegetable oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup hot water or hot coffee
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease two 9-inch round pans.
2. Sift flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt into a large bowl.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla.
4. Combine wet and dry ingredients.
5. Stir in hot water or coffee until batter is smooth.
6. Divide batter evenly into pans and bake 30–35 minutes.
7. Cool for 10 minutes in pans, then transfer to wire rack.
8. Frost once completely cooled.
Notes
For extra richness, replace water with coffee.
Use room temperature ingredients for best texture.
Wrap cooled cake layers and freeze up to 2 months.
