Description
Rich and creamy caramelized onion and Gruyere dip with perfectly golden onions and melted Swiss cheese. The ultimate crowd-pleasing appetizer that’s surprisingly easy to make.
Ingredients
4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
3 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
8 oz Gruyere cheese, freshly grated
8 oz cream cheese, room temperature
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
Instructions
1. Heat butter and olive oil in large skillet over medium heat.
2. Add sliced onions with salt, stirring to coat evenly.
3. Cook 30-35 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes, until deep golden brown.
4. Add garlic and thyme, cook 1 minute more, then cool slightly.
5. Combine cream cheese, mayonnaise, and grated Gruyere in mixing bowl.
6. Fold in cooled onion mixture until evenly distributed.
7. Transfer to greased 9×13 baking dish.
8. Bake at 375°F for 20-25 minutes until edges bubble and top is golden.
Notes
Patience is key for proper caramelization – don’t rush the onion cooking process.
You can substitute Emmental or aged Swiss cheese if Gruyere isn’t available.
Make ahead up to 24 hours – store covered and bring to room temperature before baking.
