Description

Rich and creamy caramelized onion and Gruyere dip with perfectly golden onions and melted Swiss cheese. The ultimate crowd-pleasing appetizer that’s surprisingly easy to make.

Ingredients

Scale

4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

3 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

8 oz Gruyere cheese, freshly grated

8 oz cream cheese, room temperature

1/2 cup mayonnaise

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves

Instructions

1. Heat butter and olive oil in large skillet over medium heat.

2. Add sliced onions with salt, stirring to coat evenly.

3. Cook 30-35 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes, until deep golden brown.

4. Add garlic and thyme, cook 1 minute more, then cool slightly.

5. Combine cream cheese, mayonnaise, and grated Gruyere in mixing bowl.

6. Fold in cooled onion mixture until evenly distributed.

7. Transfer to greased 9×13 baking dish.

8. Bake at 375°F for 20-25 minutes until edges bubble and top is golden.

Notes

Patience is key for proper caramelization – don’t rush the onion cooking process.

You can substitute Emmental or aged Swiss cheese if Gruyere isn’t available.

Make ahead up to 24 hours – store covered and bring to room temperature before baking.
